Team Formation Guide
Learn how teams are put together in Volleyball Engine tournaments and what to expect from each method.
When does team formation happen?
Team formation happens after check-in closes, once the director knows exactly who showed up. This ensures teams are built from confirmed, present players rather than the original registration list. The formation method used for each tournament is displayed on its detail page so you always know what to expect.
Methods
Balanced Random (Skill-Tiered)
Players are sorted by skill level into tiers (e.g. A, B, C), then randomly distributed across teams so that each team receives one player from each tier. This produces balanced rosters without anyone hand-picking favorites. It is the most common team formation method on the platform. By default, tier breakpoints auto-adjust to the skill range of present players so the tiers always reflect who actually showed up. Directors can toggle this off to use fixed breakpoints instead; when toggled off, the auto-computed values are preserved so you can tweak them manually.
Best for: Fair, competitive tournaments where nobody knows each other.
How it works
- 1.After check-in closes, the director confirms the final player list
- 2.Players are sorted by skill rating and divided into tiers (auto-adjusted to the present skill range by default)
- 3.One player from each tier is randomly assigned to each team
- 4.The result is teams with comparable overall skill levels
- 5.To use fixed tier breakpoints, turn off "Auto-adjust tiers to present players" in setup
Me + You + 2 (Pick a Partner)
During registration or check-in, each player selects one partner they want to play with. Those locked-in pairs are then combined with other pairs to form full teams. This guarantees every player gets at least one familiar teammate while still mixing the rest of the roster.
Best for: When players want to guarantee they play with a friend.
How it works
- 1.Each player selects a partner during registration or check-in
- 2.After check-in closes, the director reviews all confirmed pairs
- 3.Pairs are combined with other pairs to fill out complete teams
- 4.Unpaired players are distributed to balance the remaining rosters
Director-Assigned Teams
The tournament director builds every roster by hand. This could mean pre-set teams announced before the event, a live captain's draft at the venue, or any other custom method the director prefers. It gives the director complete control over team composition.
Best for: Leagues with returning players, or when the director wants full control.
How it works
- 1.The director decides on a team-building approach (pre-set, captain draft, etc.)
- 2.After check-in, the director assigns each player to a team manually
- 3.Rosters can be adjusted right up until the first game starts
- 4.Players see their team assignment on the tournament detail page
Fully Random
Every checked-in player is randomly placed on a team with no regard to skill level, experience, or preferences. It is the fastest way to form teams and works well when the group is already similar in skill or when competitive balance is not a priority.
Best for: Casual, social tournaments where balance is not critical.
How it works
- 1.After check-in closes, the director confirms the final player list
- 2.Players are randomly assigned to teams
- 3.Teams are posted and play begins
