Scoring Guide

Scoring Workflow Guide

Everything directors and scorekeepers need to know about entering scores, using the TV display, and managing the check-in flow.

Score Input

Scorekeepers and directors enter scores from the director portal at /director/[slug]/scorer. Select the game, enter the score for each team, and submit. Scores update in real time across the live dashboard, leaderboard, and TV display.

How it works

  1. 1.Navigate to the scorer page from the director portal
  2. 2.Select the game you want to score from the list of active matches
  3. 3.Enter the score for each team
  4. 4.Submit the score -- it updates everywhere in real time
  5. 5.Each time slot shows a progress count (e.g., "3/4 scored") and turns green with a checkmark when all matches are done
  6. 6.A notification appears when the round is fully scored

Manual Scoring

For tournaments using the Manual format, use the manual scoring page at /director/[slug]/manual-scoring. This lets you enter scores for manually-created matchups that aren't part of the auto-generated schedule.

How it works

  1. 1.Open the manual scoring page from the director portal
  2. 2.Find the matchup you created manually
  3. 3.Enter the scores for each team
  4. 4.Submit to record the result

TV Display

Set up a TV or monitor at the venue and navigate to /tv/[slug]. This shows a full-screen display of the current schedule, scores, and standings. It auto-refreshes as scores come in. Great for keeping players informed without them needing to check their phones.

How it works

  1. 1.Connect a TV or monitor at the venue to a device with a browser
  2. 2.Navigate to /tv/[slug] where [slug] is your tournament's URL slug
  3. 3.Before teams are generated, the TV shows tournament details, phase breakdown, scoring targets, estimated duration, and a QR code for spectators
  4. 4.When teams are generated, the TV waits 60 seconds before switching to the team grid, giving the director time to make adjustments without players seeing every change
  5. 5.When the schedule is generated, the TV waits another 60 seconds before switching to the live match view for the same reason
  6. 6.During active play, scores update in real time with no delay
  7. 7.Players can see the schedule, live scores, and standings at a glance
  8. 8.Use the "Advance Times" button in the director portal to shift upcoming match start times forward. Completed and in-progress games keep their original times.

Dashboard

The tournament dashboard at /dash/[slug] is the player-facing view. It shows teams, the game schedule, live scores, and standings. Share this URL with players so they can follow along on their phones.

How it works

  1. 1.Share the /dash/[slug] URL with players before or during the tournament
  2. 2.Players open the link on their phones to see teams and the game schedule
  3. 3.Scores and standings update in real time as games are scored
  4. 4.No app download required -- it works in any mobile browser

Check-in Process

The check-in page (/director/[slug]/check-in) is designed for iPad use in landscape mode. The director sees a grid of registered players and taps each name to mark them as checked in. Players who don't show up can be marked as no-shows. After check-in, the director knows exactly who's present and can form teams accordingly.

How it works

  1. 1.Open the check-in page on an iPad in landscape mode
  2. 2.A grid of registered players is displayed
  3. 3.Tap each player's name as they arrive to mark them as checked in
  4. 4.Mark absent players as no-shows
  5. 5.Once check-in is complete, proceed to team formation with an accurate headcount

Handicaps & Social Rules

Level Up tournaments can enable handicaps that are randomly assigned to teams at each level. Level 1 features social handicaps (icebreakers, celebrations, fun challenges) to keep things lighthearted. Higher levels introduce more competitive rule twists. When a match score is saved, both the winning and losing teams automatically receive a fresh handicap for their next game. The system tracks each team's handicap history and avoids repeats so every round brings something new. Directors can disable handicaps entirely or re-roll a specific team's handicap using the refresh button on team cards.

How it works

  1. 1.Open the tournament setup and navigate to the Level Up options
  2. 2.Enable handicaps if you want random rule twists assigned at each level
  3. 3.Level 1 handicaps are social and lighthearted; higher levels are more competitive
  4. 4.When a match score is submitted, both teams automatically get a new handicap for their next game
  5. 5.The system avoids repeating handicaps a team has already played with
  6. 6.Use the refresh button on a team card to re-roll that team's handicap if needed
  7. 7.Disable handicaps entirely if they are not a good fit for your group
